As many of you may know already, I am a stay-at-home Dad during the day.  I take care of my soon-to-be 6 month old daughter, then work at night.  It doesn’t leave a lot of time during the week for cooking or going out to eat.  My wife and I decided to give La Tolteca here in Sun Prairie a try.   It’s one of only a couple of Mexican restaurants in Sun Prairie that is not Taco Bell…not that Taco Bell is Mexican food, but you get the point.

My wife brought the menu home a few weeks ago,  and I really wanted Mexican food, so we decided to give it a go.  I had the “#30″ combination plate which consisted of :  1 beef burrito, one chile relleno, and one tamale…according to the menu.   My wife ordered the “#25″ combination plate, that included: 1 beef burrito, chicken enchilada, and a beef quesadilla.

When my wife placed the order for our food, she thought it was a bit odd that the person taking never asked for her name, or any other identifier to ensure we got the correct food, which we didn’t.  It seems that in the time that my wife placed the order, and she went to pick it up, they made us 2 #25′s.  One with a white sauce, and one with a red sauce.  So I will review what we had, instead of what we ordered.

My chicken enchilada was extremely  dry.  As though this were the chicken they had cooked for the lunch time crowd.  It was also very bland, no significant seasoning that you would expect in Mexican cuisine.  The beef quesadilla was slighted on the meat.   There was virtually no meat on either mine or my wife’s.  The tortilla was very thick, and dry tasting. This was also drenched in the sauce that they so abundantly covered our food in.  The beef burrito, to me, was the low-light of it all.  Dry ground beef (that’s a trick), and this batch was very salty…and I like salt.  My wife’s food was quite literally the same in all aspects, except swimming in what ever the white sauce was.

The meals we had were, fortunately, not expensive.  They were $7.75 each, but I think, that night, I would rather have invested that $15.50 in my next review.

I have checked the internet for reviews of La Tolteca, and have seen an average of “3.5 stars”, with comments praising the authenticity and taste of the food.  This was not at all my experience, but I would not rule it out for another shot in the future.  I just hope that was an off night for them.
